BOSCOLA URGES STUDENTS TO FILE SOON FOR FINANCIAL AID

HARRISBURG, JAN. 30, 2009– State Sen. Lisa Boscola today encouraged college-bound students and their families to begin the financial aid process and file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible.

“It is critical that students who wish to attend college this fall file this application if they are looking to receive assistance paying for their education,” Boscola said.  “Filing early ensures that students meet other financial aid deadlines.”

The deadline for federal and Pennsylvania state grants is May 1 for renewal applicants and first-time applicants enrolled in degree and transfer programs, but Boscola warned that individual schools may have their own deadlines for financial aid applications.

The FAFSA determines eligibility for state and federal grants, as well as scholarships, reduced-cost federal student loans, work-study programs, and many school-based student aid programs.

Boscola said that families who need assistance filing the FAFSA can visit www.PHEAA.org/FAFSA for frequently asked questions, overviews, and links to preparation worksheets and the online application.  PHEAA is also offering FAFSA completion workshops statewide through April, where financial aid professionals are available to assist in completing the application and answer students’ questions.

Students can also complete and submit the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
