Earlier this morning representatives from Norfolk Southern contacted my office to inform me of a train derailment involving three trains in Lower Saucon Township.
I can’t express my thanks to the first responders that jumped into action immediately to assess the situation and get to work cleaning up the accident. I am thankful that it appears no hazardous chemicals were involved and that clean crews deployed boons to contain any diesel fuel from the engines was contained.
My office will remain in communication with Norfolk Southern and Northampton County to assist in any way possible on the clean-up. I will also be looking forward to understanding what went wrong and how it can be avoided in the future.
Moving materials by rail is good for the environment and a critical activity for our economy. We must do everything we can to make the transport safe which means making the needed investments in our aging infrastructure.
